Earmuff/Earphone Covers
This was the first pattern I ever published, released in 2013. It is a very simple pattern to make earmuff/earphone covers. You can use any yarn wool you like. I used a soft eyelash yarn at the request of my son. He has Asperger’s and is very tactile. He loves soft and fluffy.
Resizing:
Resizing the pattern is simple. You can use a different yarn weight and hook to either increase or decrease the size of the covers, or you can alter the number of rounds that increase their diameter. To change the depth of the covers, alter the number of single crochet repeat rounds (found in rounds 5 – 7). To adjust the width of the opening, alter the number of decreases in rounds 8 and 9.
I would love to see what people do with this pattern. Please feel free to add a project to Ravelry and link to the pattern page there. The Ravelry download of this pattern includes images for reference.
One of my sons said DJs could have a lot of fun with this pattern. I can easily see why… the possibilities are endless!

Yarn:
Any medium worsted and any eyelash yarn I used:
Red Heart Soft Touch (medium worsted 4): any colour – Amount: 55.2m/ 60.4y/ 30g/ 1.06oz
Crafts Eyelash Knitting Yarn (bulky 5): any colour – Amount: 38.9m/ 42.6y/ 30g/ 1.06oz
Other Items Needed:
- scissors
- tapestry needle
- measuring tape
- stitch marker (or piece of yarn)
- 2x 6 inches corded elastic (or 2 thread covered hair elastics)
Notes:
You can use any yarn (wool) or hook you like. Just remember to alter the pattern and gauge to ensure that your covers will fit whatever you intend to use them on. The thicker the yarn… the larger the cover.
Stitches used in this pattern:
ch, sl st, sc, dc, sc 2tog (aka dec).
Let’s get started on your earmuff/earphone covers…
(Make 2)
Rnd 1: With the yarn you want to use for the pads of your earphone covers (eyelash yarn): ch 2, 8 sc in 2nd ch from loop, sl st in 1st sc [8]
Rnd 2: ch 2, dc in each sc of previous row, sl st in top of ch 2 [8]
Eyelash yarn can be difficult to work with. You may find it is easier to go by feel than by eye.
Rnd 3: ch 2, 2 dc in each dc of previous row – (inc increase made), sl st in top of ch 2 [16]
Rnd 4: ch 2, 2 dc in each dc of previous row – (inc increase made), sl st in top of ch 2 [32]
Switch to your alternate yarn choice (worsted yarn).
Rnds 5 – 7: ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st in ch 1 space, ch 1 [32]
Rnd 8: *sc 2 tog, 2 sc – (dec decrease made)* repeat from * to * around, sl st in ch 1 space, ch 1 [24]
Rnd 9: *sc 2 tog, 1 sc – (dec decrease made)* repeat from * to * around, sl st in ch 1 space [16]
Now we add the elastic. This will make it easier to use the earmuff/earphone covers. Using elastic makes it easier to remove them for washing or switching them up when you prefer another colour or style.
If using corded elastic, tie the ends together to create loops that are the size needed to slide your covers on and off.
Holding the elastic with your other hand, pull your yarn up through the center of the elastic. with your hook above the elastic: y/o,
With the yarn around the elastic; pull the yarn through the loop on the hook to create a chain stitch that embeds the elastic inside of it.
Rnd 10: Hold the elastic to lie along the edge of the previous round and work your stitches so that they trap the elastic inside. This ensures that the elastic is evenly embedded around the opening.
sc in each st around. [16]
Finishing:
f/o and weave in loose ends.
Now just slip it over the earmuff or earphones that you want to cover.
Enjoy!
