Crochet: Toys, Decor, Seasonal

Sizes: Any size you want. The spider in this pattern was made using light worsted weight yarn and a 3.75mm (US F5) hook. Its finished size is 7.5 cm (3″).

Skill Level: Beginner

US Terminology

Resources: Abbreviations Chart, Stitch Chart

Gauge: The gauge will vary on your yarn and hook choice. Try to keep your stitches fairly snug so any stuffing you use will not be visible.

Hooks: I used 3.75mm (US F5) for this spider, but use whatever hook is right for your yarn choice. I recommend it be at least one size smaller than the recommended size on the label.

Yarn:

Premier Big Ball (#4, worsted): black – Amount: It was such a small amount that I didn’t weigh it.

Other Items Needed:

  • Stitch marker or a piece of yarn
  • Fiber fill or scrap yarn to fill the body. I used the tails I cut off the spider.
  • Tapestry needle
  • scissors
  • googly eyes, beads, or yarn if you would like to add eyes.

Notes:

Using different yarn weights with the appropriate hook for that yarn will give you a wide variety of sizes without having to change the pattern.

Stitches used in this pattern:

  • ch, sc, inc, dec

Let’s get started making your cute crocheted spider…

The Body

The body is worked in continuous rounds. Use your stitch marker or piece of yarn to keep track of where each round begins.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in mr [6]

Rnd 2: *inc, sc* three times [9]

Rnds 3 – 4: sc around [9]

Rnd 5: *dec, sc* three times [6]

Rnd 6: *dec, sc* twice, sc [4]

Stuff lightly

Rnd 7: *inc, sc* twice [6]

Rnd 8: *inc, sc*, three times [9]

Rnds 9 – 11: sc around [9]

Rnd 12: *dec, sc* three times [6]

Rnd 13: *dec, sc* twice, sc [4]

Stuff lightly. Fasten off and weave the tail through the remaining 4 stitches. Pull closed to form a point. Secure the tail and weave in loose ends.
Tie a strand of matching yarn around the center of the body snugly to accentuate the middle.

The Legs (make 4)

Rnd 1: ch 21. Fasten off and weave loose ends into the chain. [21]

Sew the legs onto the center of the body. Work through the center (11th ch) of each leg strand so it becomes 2 legs. See picture below.
